| VIPS’ Apple Awards Winners Represent Hundreds of Volunteer Hours

The 2011 Volunteers In Public Schools Apple Award winners are: Jason Jones (Crystal Apple Award), Susan Wheeler (standing in for Golden Apple Award winner Alison Bondurant), Anita Miller (Golden Apple Award), Konya Brown for State Farm Baton Rouge Operations Center (Golden Apple Community Partner Award for work at LaSalle Elementary School) and Joan Pennington (Golden Apple Award).
Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) announced its five 2011 Apple Awards winners at its 21st annual Volunteer Picnic and Apple Awards ceremony held May 12 at University Baptist Church. Seventy-seven outstanding school volunteer nominees competed for five VIPS awards for volunteer service.
"The record number of volunteers who were nominated is a fine example of the increased community involvement in our public schools. At VIPS, we are thrilled that so many schools took the time to nominate those who give their time to help students succeed," said Rob Wood, VIPS Volunteer Director.
Nominees and guests at the Picnic were treated to a complimentary jambalaya dinner provided by chefs from the ExxonMobil Polyolefins Plant and to ice cream sundaes from Sonic. Crystal Apple Award winners are those who have volunteered in a school for 10 years or longer. The sponsors of the Crystal Apple Award, VIPS top volunteer award, are: Albemarle, CH2M Hill, Merrill Lynch and Our Lady of the Lake.
Golden Apple sponsors are Cortana Mall, Wright & Percy, Louisiana Lottery and Taylor Porter. In-kind sponsors include ARAMARK, Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Gold Star Trophies, Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry and Lance Hayes Flowers. Golden Apple Awards are for at least one year of service in public schools.
