Students, Rep. Carter Don ‘Wigs’ for Westdale Heights Fourth Graders’ Visit to Capitol - September 20, 2011
Although they were made of cotton balls and glue, the white “powdered” wigs Westdale Heights Academic Magnet fourth graders wore Thursday, September 15, during a visit to the Capitol made them feel like their forefathers.  Rep. Stephen Carter, Dist. 68 (pictured, center), even joined in the fun by donning a wig himself.

The visit allowed students to gain a better understanding of where state government officials and representatives work and produce new laws.  They observed the government and political system at work on the House Floor.  Students also attended a class session on state and national constitutions to gain a better understanding of the basis of the government.   Finally, students learned about the role citizens play in respect to the government.  Carter and Jessica Braun, an attorney with the Civil Law and Procedure Committee for the Louisiana House of Representatives, discussed state and national government operations.

WHAM’s visit coincided with Constitution Day, which was Saturday, September 17.
