| Westdale Heights ES Student’s Mom Returns Home from Afghanistan and Surprises Son at School

Aaron Sully, a fourth grader, and his sister Ariel Sully, a kindergartener, weren’t expecting anything special to happen yesterday, May 18, at Westdale Heights Academic Magnet (WHAM) School. Both were hard at work in their respective classrooms when their mother surprised them.
Lt. Commander Kerry Sully, a U.S. Navy nurse practitioner, has been at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan on active status since mid-December 2009. Upon returning to the United States yesterday, she came straight to the school to hug her children. They were joined by dad Bryan Sully, a grandfather and a great-grandfather.
Four generations of the Sully family celebrated the soldier’s safe return. In addition, Lt. Commander Sully returned a patriotic bear to Spanish teacher LuLu Ribas. Ribas gave the bear to the nurse last Veteran’s Day. It was decked out in Ribas’ mother’s American flag pin, and the lieutenant commander kept the bear with her during her war travels. “I wanted the bear to be a reminder of WHAM’s love and support for Aaron’s mother while she was away,” Ribas said. “Today, the bear came back with that special American flag pin in tack!”
In addition, Lt. Commander Sully also had other stuffed animals from students she kept with her, along with a WHAM T-shirt she wore periodically. ”The toys went through medicals and face mask training upon arrival overseas. They came back very dirty and worn looking, but they came back ‘alive and well,’” said teacher Virginia Reedy-Lindsey. Reedy-Lindsey’s oldest son fought in Iraq in 2002-2003, was injured in a bomb blast and received a Purple Heart. The teacher wrote a poem to her son and shared it with the lieutenant colonel last Veteran’s Day, and the nurse carried it with her to her assignment in Afghanistan.
