As a special thank you to all “first responders” in emergencies, especially during the anniversary of 9-11, Westdale Middle School students and Magnet lead teacher Clare Peterson have been delivering cakes to the neighborhood fire station, East Baton Rouge Station No. 7.  They’ll deliver a final cake to the firefighters at 10 a.m. Friday, September 9.  This week, the school’s marquee sign is “Westdale Remembers … Thank You 1st Responders.”

Peterson said Westdale Middle School students have been learning about the events of September 11, 2001, in their Social studies classes.  In several classes, students watched videos of the heroic efforts of the first responders called into action in the aftermath of the tragedy.  Most middle school students have little or no memory of the event 10 years ago and were touched by the efforts of the Emergency Medical Services staff, firefighters and police on that day.  Eighth grader Donald Soule, a member of the Westdale Flag Guard, came up with the idea to honor the local firefighters.
