Youth Meet At Anti-Drugs, Anti-Violence Summit

On December 3, more than 80 students from each high school in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) participated in the first annual Educated Young People Against Drugs and Violence Youth Summit. It was held at the School System’s Central Office.
Student leaders from each school were given advice and input from area community leaders, including East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden, EBRPSS School Superintendent Charlotte D. Placide, State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmondson, radio personality Silky Slim and others. From the importance of obtaining an education to making decisions that do not lead to violence or drug use, each speaker had important messages to share with the young people.
Educated Young People Against Drugs and Violence was organized last year by Glen Oaks High School senior Jeremy Herbert. The organization has grown from 27 students to 150 students at the school. For his work on this issue, Hebert was awarded the Superintendent’s Ambassador’s Award last year. |
